Mandy and I aspire to be city people. But really, I love the mountains and she loves the prairie, so why on earth are we moving to Tokyo, one of the largest cities in the world and home to 36 million people?! The video below nails it. Rev. Timothy Keller, Senior Minister of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York speaks about why church-planting in Tokyo is important as well as challenging. This video resonates with our convictions. We are excited to live and minister in Tokyo!
Why reach Tokyo with the Gospel?
Tokyo is influential. It is one of most influential cities in Japan, Asia and the world.
Tokyo is spiritually needy. Less than 1% of Japanese are Christian.
What are the challenges of reaching Tokyo with the Gospel?
Contextualization. A gospel presentation contextualized for North America or South America will not do. The gospel needs to be contextualized so that it speak to the heart, the values and concerns of the Japanese people.
Cost. Tokyo is one of the most expensive cities to live in. More expensive than downtown Manhattan. American churches are still the most wealthy churches in the world. It is up to us as the American church to help the Japanese reach Tokyo with the gospel.
